The Branch Counsellor is a University or College faculty member or
instructor, active in the IEEE, who serves as an advisor to the Branch
and its student officers. As the student officers may change annually,
and sometimes more often, the Branch Counsellor lends a sense of
continuity to Branch affairs. Additional, the Branch Counsellor acts as
a liaison with IEEE Headquarters and should be familiar with all
aspects of Branch operations. Specifically, the Counsellor's position
includes the following responsibilities:
1. Promoting the IEEE and membership benefits on campus.
2. Acting as a role model for students, thus encouraging students to
join the IEEE and to remain members of IEEE after graduation.
3. Working with the Branch Mentor to guide the activities of the Branch.
4. Informing other faculty members and staff of the activities of the
Branch, and seeking their assistance in promoting meetings discussing
benefits of membership, and supporting IEEE programs. The Branch Mentor
and members of the Section SAC should also be contacted and called upon
for assistance.
5. Promoting an awareness of the IEEE organization and its policies,
and conducting an IEEE training session for Branch officers on aspects
of the organization. The Counsellor should be prepared to counsel the
Branch officers in student matters pertaining to the Bylaws and
Constitution.
6. Fostering good relations with the local Section and encouraging
students to establish a regular liaison with the Section Student
Activities Chairperson. Additionally, the Counsellor should encourage
students to attend Section meetings and seek appointment of a student
as a voting member of the Section Executive Committee.
7. Consulting the Section Student Activities Chairperson (SAC), the
Regional Student Activities Committee Chairperson (RSAC), and/or the
Regional Director about Branch problems or activities as necessary, and
participating in the Section Student Activities Committee or the
Section Executive Committee meetings as appropriate.
8. Sharing all correspondence and communications received for the
Branch with Branch officers. Establishing a special mailbox for the
Branch allows the officers easy access to IEEE mail.
9. Endorsing all qualified new IEEE Student member applications.
10. Participating in annual or semi-annual meetings of the Regional
Activities Committee, including any Branch Counsellor Workshops at
Regional Conferences.
11. Promoting the IEEE Student Paper contest and providing help to students interested in entering.
12. Promoting student awareness of the professional and technical
benefits of membership, awards, contests and other programs. The
Counsellor should also ask working professional from the local Section
to assist in membership promotion.
13. Establishing industrial contacts for Branch programs and
activities, including speakers and tours and other opportunities to
help Student members network.
14. Oversee student reporting
15. Promote IEEE meeting and registration tool (Volunteer Tools)
